Transformation from innocence to guilt

Another form of recreation is trance. It is hypnotic and simultaneously a sensory intoxication, movingly intense and ambiguous. Trance reflects the ambivalence of Berlin: modernity and tradition, man or woman…like the transformation from innocence to sin.

When Houdini was captivating women with his magic tricks, J.F. Schwarzlose's Trance fragrance already existed. Even today, the perfume enthralls customers with its magical notes of Turkish rose, rose absolute, and precious oud. A poster for the fragrance from the early 20th century is inspired by the magician's tricks. Harry Houdini, who captivated not only women but also men, was known for his escape acts and the disappearance of animals like an elephant. Houdini was famous in America and England, but his most important market remained Germany. The Schwarzlose family, which split up and distributed various perfume brands worldwide, dedicated the poster for their Trance fragrance to Houdini. The advertisement depicts an enchanted woman who cannot resist the seductive scent. Max Schwarzlose, who launched the fragrance under his own name at the time, even called it "The Lady's Talisman."
